Within just three days, three oil refineries in three different EU countries – Hungary, Slovakia and Romania – exploded. All three process Russian crude oil via the Druzhba pipeline. The events are so closely linked in terms of time and structure that the suspicion of targeted sabotage is almost inevitable. What is missing from the headlines is the actual act of terrorism against nature and people!
The explosion of a medium-sized refinery releases an average of 200,000 to 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent – through the combustion of oil, the release of methane, consequential damage in the supply chain and the immediate emission of soot particles into the stratosphere. Extrapolated to three plants, we conservatively estimate that at least half a million to over a million tonnes of CO₂ were ejected into the atmosphere within a few hours. Soot particles, polycyclic hydrocarbons and heavy metals not only enter the air locally, but also act as climate turbochargers by absorbing solar radiation and additionally heating the atmosphere.
While the population is burdened by CO₂ taxes and climate certificates, the geopolitical reality burns entire refineries in seconds. No climate summit, no environmental conference talks about the CO₂ of war – even though it is orders of magnitude higher than the emissions of millions of citizens combined.
Energy infrastructure becomes the frontline and the atmosphere becomes the battlefield. Each of these incidents is exacerbating the global climate, fuelling political tensions and at the same time driving us towards a toxic future in which wars destroy not only countries – but the livelihoods of all humanity
