The debate on the dangerousness of electric cars has been raging for quite some time, but recently doubts and fears have been heightened by the fateful incident in which two firefighters were killed in a garage by an explosion allegedly caused by electric cars.

This Monday the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez Almeida, declared that the fire in Alcorcón (Madrid), where the two firefighters died, “does not determine” that measures should be taken immediately to prohibit the parking of electric cars in car parks. However, there are places where parking has already been banned.

In Madrid, for example, according to ‘El Español’, there is already a car park that restricts entry to vehicles that are 100% electric, as hybrids can park inside. This is the building number 11 on Calle de los Relatores, where the following message appears at the entrance: “Given the possible fire risks posed by a 100% electric car, access to the garage for these vehicles is prohibited”.

But this has not only happened here in Spain; other countries such as China have already begun to restrict access to underground car parks for this type of vehicle. However, the Madrid car park assures that the measure was already in place before the accident in Alcorcón.

The debate on its prohibition

Although there have been fires related to this type of vehicle, in Spain it is still not clear whether they are banned, as there is no official regulation that establishes it.

“These accidents should make us think about exactly what is happening and what is the best way to deal with these risks, and that is what we are working on at the Department of Mobility, to find out exactly why these incidents occur and how often they happen”, said the Mayor of Madrid.
