The Meloni government’s decision to cancel the fines for No Vax patients who did not comply with the Covid vaccination requirement did not please Matteo Bassetti. The director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Policlinico San Martino hospital in Genoa commented on the news with bitter irony. Massimo Andreoni and Nino Cartabellotta were also critical.

Fines to No Vax cancelled, Bassetti’s comment
Matteo Bassetti commented at the microphones of Adnkronos Salute on the decision of the Council of Ministers to enact the stop to fines for No Vax people who did not comply with the obligation to vaccinate against Covid. His words:
‘Italy is the country of amnesties, of rules – right or wrong – not followed and of evaders legalised by the state. A nice Christmas message with emergencies knocking at the door, an epidemic in Congo, bird flu knocking and the flu about to explode’.
Even Andreoni against amnesty to No Vax fines
In Adnkronos Salute, Massimo Andreoni, scientific director of Simit (Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases), also commented negatively on the Meloni government’s decision.
Andreoni said: ‘The amnesty of fines to no-vaxers leaves a bitter taste in the mouth and rewards those who behaved against the law’. The scientific director of Simit, while understanding this decision ‘under the social aspect of amnesty on the Covid pandemic’, explained that, ‘as a citizen’, he feels ‘a bit like the fool and the punished of the situation’. Then he added: ‘The amnesty penalises and humiliates those who behaved correctly with respect to the vaccination obligation during the Covid pandemic’.

The reimbursement of sums already paid for fines to No Vax, mentioned by Cartabellotta, is not present in the text of the Decreto Milleproroghe that has arrived on the table of the Council of Ministers. Earlier drafts had circulated that also provided for the reimbursement of fines already paid.
