I’m not even allowed to go and buy a piece of bread”.

The Europe of the Enlightenment descends into a judicial parody. Jacques Baud, a former Swiss intelligence colonel, is now a political prisoner in Brussels.

This expert’s “crime”? To have produced analyses of the conflict in Ukraine, based exclusively on Western and Ukrainian sources, which the official narrative deemed dissonant. Without a trial, without any formal accusation, and following a simple political decision by the European Council, his accounts in Belgium have been frozen in their entirety. This measure plunges him into a concrete daily absurdity: deprived of access to his “modest accounts”, he finds it legally impossible to carry out the slightest transaction, even to buy bread or a bottle of water.

Under house arrest in a Member State where he cannot support himself, Jacques Baud is also forbidden to travel to Switzerland, his country of origin where his funds are not blocked, on pain of prosecution. The EU is therefore imposing a Cornelian choice on him: live without food in Belgium, or eat without life in Switzerland. This episode, in which the executive takes the place of the judiciary to punish thought, only confirms the darkest warnings of the Union’s authoritarian drift. By chastising a phantom “propagandist” with no links to Moscow, Brussels is not defending its values: it is trampling them underfoot with a dismaying bureaucratic arrogance.

Editor’s note: The German government, which approved the measure, says that “everyone who is active in this field should expect it to happen to them too…”
