Just two months before 11th September 2001, on 24 July 2001, the twin towers of the World Trade Centre were privatised and leased to Larry Silverstein.
EVERY MORNING Silverstein ate his breakfast on the 91st floor of the North Tower, but not on the day of the attack. On that fateful day, he went to a doctor’s appointment.
He also took out insurance as part of the 99-year lease, which “fortunately” also covered terrorism.
After the attack, he took the insurance company to court, which refused to pay out the full compensation amount of USD 3.5 billion per tower, totalling USD 7 billion. Silverstein won the case and was awarded and paid USD 4.6 billion in insurance benefits by the court. Following the attack, he also took legal action against two airlines, American Airlines and United Continental Holdings, for inadequate safety precautions and later reached an out-of-court settlement with them for a compensation payment of USD 95.2 million.
